Discovering and Debunking Conspiracy Theories: The Power of Dekonspira

Discovering and Debunking Conspiracy Theories: The Power of Dekonspira

We are living in a digital age where topics – whether true or false – have the power to spread rapidly online ranging from more comical conspiracy theories to others that could be interesting for other reasons, and Dekonspira is an application that gives you the ability to explore what’s trending now along with what happened in the past.

Powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and semiotic search in particular, Dekonspira opens new doors by allowing users to understand the spread of conspiracies online, including where they started and why they gained popularity.

The company is focused on being an independent curator of content where the proprietary technology behind the app is what truly creates the user experience and there’s no stance taken on whether conspiracies/topics are true or false. The ability to see connections between topics is what’s most exciting regardless of what the topics may be.

The Dekonspira team is looking forward to the next steps as we roll out new features in the near future. Be sure to sign-up for our newsletter to stay in the loop!

Think big! The 15-minute Conspiracy

This story is intriguing, because it unfolds at a micro-local level (the 15-minute walk neighborhood perimeter), and at the same time taps into super-charged entities like the New World Order.

Let’s first select multiple versions of that story.

Let’s first select multiple versions of that story.

Then build a first map, which unsurprisingly covers a lot of ground. This is a patchwork of all the mentioned entities, loosely related one to another.

In order to build a higher view, we need to select a bunch of interesting concepts and named entities (note that there are very few of those), and remap inward.

We won’t be able to build one story because that story doesn’t exist, but we can now see several community of entities that paint the patterns of conspiracies.

The New World Order is the hairball on top right off the map, with the underlying theories of worldwide population control.

Closer to the 15-minute controversy, we find the urban ghettoization orchestrated by the socialists, “the socialist prison”, claimed to be similar to the Warsaw ghetto imposed the Nazis.

All this is part of the “Great Reset” conspiracy, the controlled lockdown of local populations under the pretext of climate change.

The map is perfect, straight out of the search box. The core of the story is the pink section of the map: “The day after Epstein died, Trump tweeted the conspiracy theory that Clinton killed Epstein”.

As noted before when exploring the Britney Spears conspiracies, the Epstein conspiracy is about named entities. There is not much substance besides the propagation of suspicion through Epstein’s social network. That somewhat unrelated part of the story is showing in purple.

This is why the map jumps out of the box without any need for further work: named entities are less ambiguous than topics expressed by common phrases.

The same pattern was found when exploring the Britney Spears conspiracy.

And the exact opposite is true for our “15-minute conspiracy” case-study: big concepts like climate change required a significant amount of work to get the story right.
